Drawing from his own pastoral experience as a priest and bishop before he became Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla has produced a remarkably eloquent and resourceful defense of Catholic tradition in the sphere of family life and sexual morality. He writes in the conviction that science–biology, psychology, sociology–can provide valuable information on particular aspects of relations between the sexes, but that a full understanding can be obtained only by study of the human person as a whole.
Central to his argument is the contrast between the personalistic and the utilitarian views of marriage and of sexual relations. The former views marriage as an interpersonal relationship, in which the well-being snd self-realization of each partner are of overriding importance to the other.
It is only within this framework that the full purpose of marriage can be realized. The alternative, utilitarian view, according to which a sexual partner is an object for use, holds no possibility of fulfillment and happiness. Wojtyla argues that divorce, artificial methods responsigility birth control, adultery pre-marital sexand sexual perversions are all in various ways incompatible with the personalistic view of the sexual self-realization of the human person.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the book is that Wojtyla appeals throughout to ordinary, human experience, logically examined. He draws support for his views on wojty,a proper gratification of sexual needs, on birth control, and on other matters, from the findings of physiologists and psychologists. His conclusions responisbility with the traditional teachings of the Church, which invoke scriptural authority.
His approach ensures that non-Christians also can consider his arguments on their own merits. Read more Read less. Add all three to Cart Add all three to List.

This is for the non-Catholic review reader. I know, you might be thinking I’m a Catholic trying to get you Non-Catholic to read this book. I am a Non-Catholic Christian who read this book at the recommendation of my Catholic friend. At first the writing was hard to grasp but by the end of the first chapter I got used to the way the late Pope wrote. And to the Non-Catholics, I will capitalize Pope in the same we we capitalize President or King out of a sign of respect. Wojtyla took a fresh approach to sexuality to me.
It was mixed with philosophy, Bibilicism, and psychology.
Love and Responsibility Quotes
This is written for ALL Christians, trust me. I leaned too much to talk about. Wojtyla stresses God in the relationship between two people and what God intends love to be. This is completely mind blowing. Before this I laughed at the Catholic Church for being anti contraceptive.
After reading Love and Responsibility I no longer believe in any form of contraceptives. I trust God, not myself. Read the book to find out more. I will be buying this book for many of my friends.
This book provides a great understanding of sexuality and the Catholic Church. Paired with Christopher West’s Theology of the Body explained, you understand how God intended sexuality to be used. It is a dense read, but not an over complicated read. By this I mean it digs down and gets to the root definition of the actual words that reference sexuality in the Bible.
You don’t have to be a theologian to understand what the future pope and saint is saying. Just be open to the message. And read other encyclics and books on this topic to get the full picture.
Love and Responsibility: Karol Wojtyla: : Books
This book is not an easy read as it contains some difficult philosophical and theological arguments, but the main point the author makes throughout is that justice demands that love respect the value of the other person, rather than just using them to obtain pleasure.
Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The book is a great addition for every Christian that wants to know about love, and the responsibility that love has to create in the relation of woman and man, so that in fact they are acting love, purely and perfectly.
An idea that the book left me, is that this is an important thing to realize, specially on these times, as we tend to believe that sensuality mostly by men or affectivity are the norths for love or are in fact love, instead of just the subjective profile of lovenot knowing that the objective profile of love which is the one that should guide and correct is in fact, the affirmation of the value of the person.
Which in summary is to give the person the dignity that it deserves. This can only be achieved by virtue chastity, temperance, self mastery, etcand virtue can only grow by our spirituality. Only love virtue is truly love. The end of these virtues is not celibacy, it is the ability to love purely, and therefore truly. Love is not a feeling or an instinct it is a decision, as our will needs to decide toward it, as if it doesn’t, it decides away from it.
Virtue needs to grow as we grow spiritually, and this is, because love only reaches its level objectively, through virtue. Love is a fruit of the Spirit and remembering that only God is good and Love is about goodness love is of God as God is lovetherefore virtue has to grow when we grow spiritually, as love in us goodness in usshould be growing.
Virtue is the way to act that goodness. Wojhyla reflections on embodiment and human sexuality I’ve read both English translations now many times, and this new translation by a man formed in the same intellectual tradition as Wojtyla captures well and precisely his profound and penetrating thought.
Marol included article added as an appendix explaining more clearly the dynamic of self-giving spousal love is a great addition, and clarifies more fully the central concept of the work. In this book Saint woohoo: Rezponsibility Paul II Karol Wojtyla when he wrote it does a beautiful job at explaining what love should be in marriage. I purchased this book while preparing for marriage, it was very helpful!
I have been married for almost 10 years now and I still go to it for reference. This is definitely one of my favorite books to recommend for marriage related topics! This book changed my life. It was the first book to explain the teaching of the Catholic Church on love and sexuality that made sense to me and helped me live respinsibility commitment to chastity.
Responsibiity work remains definitive of the personalistic understanding of sex as a natural capacity to love. The last chapter gives easy to understand guidelines that llove helpful without being casuistic.
This work is not about NFP technology but about living a good life wnd a sexual person. Too often JPII is read as a justification for a particular “natural” sexual praxis. Grace builds upon nature–to heal, perfect, and elevate it. Without grace, this work will read like just Mt. See all reviews.
